2025 Beijing Sport University Master and PhD Prospectus for International Students

I. Program Introduction

BSU now has 12 graduate majors and 7 doctoral majors for international students. For information about majors, main courses, tuition fees, etc., please refer to the 2025 Catalog of Beijing Sport University (BSU) Undergraduate Majors for International Students.

The duration of study for international students pursuing an academic master's degree is three years, while the duration for those pursuing a professional master's degree (inInternational Chinese Education) is two years.The degree and a graduation certificate will be conferred to those who have

passed all required exams with satisfactory results and passed the thesis defense.


II. Application Requirements

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a foreign passport and comply with the relevant regulations such as the Notice by the Ministry of Education of Regulating Admission of International Students to Chinas Higher Education Institutions (Letter No. 12 [2020] of the Ministry of Education);

2. Applicants are expected to be in good physical and mental health and meet the physical examination requirements for a Chinese Visa or a Foreigner’s Residence Permit, as well as those for BSU programs, to ensure normal study and life in China. Physical examination standards refer to the “Guiding Opinions on Physical Examination for Admission to Ordinary Colleges and Universities”;

3. Bachelor’s degree is required for master programs. Master’s degree is required for doctoral programs.

4. Applicants for master's and doctoral programs must have a Chinese proficiency level of HSK 5 or above according to the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). Those who have obtained a degree from a Chinese university where Chinese was the language of instruction are exempt from providing an HSK certificate.

5. Applicants must have no record of disciplinary violation, public security punishment or criminal conduct; be friendly to China and equipped with moral integrity; comply with Chinese laws and university rules and regulations, and respect Chinese customs.


III. How and When to Apply

1. How to apply

BSU accepts online applications. Applicants should register on the online system (https://ims.bsu.edu.cn/EEdepot.aspx) within the application period and upload application materials as required.

January 18, 2025, to June 1, 2025 (Beijing Time, GMT+8)


IV. Application Materials

1. All degree certificates earned at the undergraduate level and above, and those who have not yet graduated must provide a pre-graduation certificate. (Degree certificates must be obtained at the latest before enrolment).

2. Nationality certificate

2.1 Passport information page (valid after September 30, 2025);

2.2 Applicants who were originally Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign nationalities should provide the following materials:

(1) Certificate of Cancellation of Chinese Household Registration and Certificate of Renunciation of Chinese Nationality dated before April 30, 2021;

(2) Endorsement pages with entry and exit stamps of visits to China in the applicants passport from April 30, 2021 to the time of application.

(3) Proof of residence abroad for at least two years by April 30, 2021 (nine months of residence abroad per year may count as one year, subject to entry and exit stamps).

2.3 Applicants should provide the following if one or both of his or her parents are Chinese citizens:

(1) Certificate of the applicant obtaining foreign nationality at birth or afterward;

(2) The nationality or household registration certificates of both parents (passports or ID cards);

(3) For applicants who obtain foreign nationality at birth, if one or both of the parents are Chinese citizens with permanent residence abroad, a certificate of the corresponding permanent residence is needed. If one or both of the parents are Chinese citizens without permanent residence abroad, a certificate of the applicant’s renunciation of Chinese nationality is required.

3. Academic transcripts:

Applicants for master's programs must submit complete transcripts during their undergraduate studies; Applicants for doctoral programs are required to submit complete transcripts of their undergraduate and master's degrees.

4. Language proficiency certificates (provide at least one of the following):

4.1 Chinese language proficiency certificate:

(1) HSK (Level 5) Examination Score Report;

(2) Other equivalent Chinese proficiency certificates.

4.2 English language proficiency certificate (for English as a Second Language students only):

(1) IELTS: an overall band score of 6 and above;

(2) TOEFL iBT: an overall score of 90 and above.

5. Research plan:

Master's degree applicants are required to submit a research plan of not less than 800 words in Chinese. PhD applicants are required to submit a research experience and research plan of at least 1500 words in Chinese;

6. Letters of Recommendation:

2 original letters of recommendation from scholars with the title of Associate Professor or above, or senior professionals in the relevant industry.

7. Original certificate of no criminal record:

(1) Applicants currently in China must provide a certificate of no criminal record in China issued by the local exit and entry administration department or public security organ;

(2) Applicants currently not in China must provide a certificate of no criminal record issued by the public security administration of their home country.

Notes:

(1) If any of the above application materials are not in Chinese or English, notarized translations in Chinese or English must be provided.

(2) There is no need to mail paper materials at the application stage.


V. Entrance Interview

BSU will review the application materials. Those who pass the review will participate in the online expert interview organized by the school they apply to from February to June 2025. Applicants will be selected based on the interview results, and those who fail the interview will not be admitted. Please check your email in a timely manner for the specific interview time.

BSU considers transfer applications from international students who have been accepted by another university. Transfer students should participate in the examination according to the same criteria as the current year’s prospectus and earn a qualifying grade before being admitted.


VI. Admission and Registration

1. Admission

Applicants who pass the materials review and the interview will be informed via email by early July, and can also log in to the application system to check the results.

BSU will send out the Admission Notice, the Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/202 Form) and other relevant admission documents to admitted applicants. It usually takes four to five weeks to mail out the materials after the admission process is completed. Admitted students should apply for a study visa (X1 or X2 visa) at the Chinese embassy (consulate) in their home country using the BSU Admission Notice and the Visa Application for Study in China (JW202/201 Form).

2. Registration

New students should register in person on time according to the time specified in the Admission Notice. Counselors in each school will contact these students by email before the start of the semester. Please keep an eye on the mailbox. When registering, students are required to present the Admission Notice, original JW201/202 Form, passport, and original application materials. Those who have undergone a physical examination in their home country are required to provide the original physical examination record.

3. Review

The applicant’s materials will be reviewed by the relevant schools at the time of registration. BSU reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission for the following reasons: (1) there are discrepancies between the applicant’s actual situation and their Admission Notice, candidate information and other supporting materials; (2) the applicant is found to engage in acts of falsification, commit illegalities for personal gains, or apply for double registration, among other violations.


VII. Scholarships

1. Chinese Government Scholarship

Applications will be accepted by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), embassies (consulates) abroad, or relevant organizations. These organizations will submit applicant information, negotiate admission to the university, and provide feedback on admission. 2. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (Confucius Institute Scholarship)

The Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) organizes the application and examination. For the applicants who have passed the CLEC’s review, the CLEC will request the university to review their application materials for admission. For details on the application process, please visit http://ccsp.chinese.cn/. The final admission result will be subject to the CLEC’s announcement.

3. Beijing Government Scholarship

Applicants should apply to BSU for the scholarship after enrollment and will be evaluated according to BSU’s scholarship evaluation method after BSU receives the application materials.

4. BSU Belt and Road Scholarship

Applicants should apply to BSU for the scholarship along with their program application and will be evaluated according to BSU’s scholarship evaluation method after BSU receives the application materials.

[About visa application]

Admitted students should apply for a Chinese study visa at a Chinese embassy using the Admission Notice and the Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/202 Form). Students who will study for more than 180 days should apply for an X1 visa, and change it to a residence permit for the purpose of study at BSU’s Office for International Exchange and Cooperation within 30 days upon arrival in China; students who will study for less than 180 days may apply for an X2 visa.

[About medical insurance]

The Ministry of Education of China stipulates that international students must purchase medical insurance offered within Chinese territory during their stay in China. Students can purchase the medical insurance that meets requirements in their home country, or purchase it at the School of International Education and Exchange of BSU on the day of registration. Students who do not have the required medical insurance will not be able to register.
